Getting there - by road
The district lies on the A69 trunk road between the M6 at Carlisle
and the A1(M) at Newcastle. In addition the A68, the tourist route
to Scotland, runs from north of Scotch Corner on the A1, via Carter
Bar, to Edinburgh through the Pennines, Hadrian's Wall Country and

Getting there - by rail
The fastest time from London to Newcastle is 2 hours 40 minutes.
The scenic Newcastle-Carlisle rail line connects the frequent InterCity
service of the east and west coast main lines. Connections are available
with rapid services to all parts of the country. Rail timetable

Ferry connections with Europe are direct via the International
Ferry Terminal, Royal Quays, North Shields, (45-minute drive from
